Determination of smoke point of kerosene and jet fuel

I. Standard Definition and Scope

The smoke point refers to the maximum height (unit: mm) of a smokeless flame produced when fuel burns in a standard lamp, serving as a core indicator for evaluating combustion performance of kerosene and jet fuels. The current national standard GB/T 382-2017 applies to:

Lamp kerosene: Smoke point requirement ≥20mm

Jet fuel (aviation kerosene): Smoke point requirement ≥25mm

II. Determination Methods and Instrument Requirements

Manual Method (GB/T 382-2017)

Smoke point lamp assembly: Must include a fuel reservoir (capacity 25ml±0.5ml), a wick tube (inner diameter 4.0mm±0.2mm), and a millimeter scale. The wick should be made of pure cotton (weave density 21±1 threads/cm).

Procedure:

Inject the sample into the reservoir to the marked line;

Ignite the wick, adjust flame height to the appearance of smoke tail, then reverse adjust until the smoke tail disappears;

Record three independent measurements, taking the average if the range ≤2mm.

Automatic Method (Newly Added in GB/T 382-2017)

Uses an automatic smoke point tester, supporting international standards like ASTM D1322 and ISO 3014, with higher precision via optical sensor detection of smoke tail disappearance.

III. Key Influencing Factors and Result Correction

Environmental conditions:

Temperature should be controlled at 18-25°C, humidity at 40%-70%;

Atmospheric pressure deviations beyond 98-104kPa require a 0.2mm correction per 1kPa deviation.

Instrument calibration:

Calibrate using standard fuel mixtures of toluene (correction coefficient 0.85±0.05) and isooctane (correction coefficient 1.00±0.05).

IV. Quality Control and Industry Applications

Precision requirements:

Manual method repeatability ≤±2mm, reproducibility ≤±4mm;

Fuel ratio control:

Jet fuel aromatics content ≤20%, lamp kerosene ≤10% to maintain smoke point compliance.

Oil product smoke point tester is designed and manufactured according to GB/T382 "kerosene smoke point determination method" standard provisions.

For the determination of the smoke point of kerosene and jet fuel for lamps, that is, the maximum height of a smokeless flame under specified conditions when a sample is burned in a standard lamp, expressed in millimeters

The kerosene smoke point tester adopts millimeter scale background, which can clearly read the data

the whole instrument structure is compact and complete

the kerosene smoke point tester adopts plug type structure, the replacement of lampwick is more convenient

The kerosene smoke point tester adopts special glass observation window, easy to operate

The kerosene smoke point tester is easy to operate and has high repeatability
