How is the carbon residue content of lubricating oil determined?

2025-08-22

Residual carbon refers to the carbonaceous residue left after the thermal decomposition and evaporation of petroleum products such as lubricating oil under specific conditions. Its content can reflect the degree of oil refinement and the tendency of coking and carbon deposition during use. Excessive residual carbon content may lead to the formation of carbon deposits inside the equipment, affecting heat transfer efficiency and even causing malfunctions.

The determination of carbon residue in lubricating oil is usually carried out by the electric furnace method. The SD-30011 digital display temperature-controlled electric furnace method carbon residue tester is a dedicated device for this test. This instrument is designed and manufactured in accordance with the industry standard of the People's Republic of China SH/T0170 "Determination of Carbon Residue (Electric Furnace Method)". The core testing logic is to place the lubricating oil sample in a special porcelain crucible and heat it in a high-temperature environment controllable by the instrument (up to 520℃, temperature control accuracy ±5℃), causing the volatile components in the sample to evaporate and decompose. The percentage of the remaining non-volatile carbonaceous residue mass to the original mass of the sample is the residual carbon content of the lubricating oil.

The SD-30011 measuring instrument features the advantages of high efficiency and precise testing: Firstly, it adopts an integrated structure design, with the heating furnace and controller integrated, making operation convenient and the appearance neat. Secondly, it is equipped with both main and auxiliary heating functions (with heating power of 300W+600W+1000W), which can automatically or manually control the auxiliary heating according to the test requirements to ensure a stable and controllable heating process. Thirdly, it adopts a one-furnace four-hole platform structure, which can simultaneously place four samples for parallel testing, significantly enhancing testing efficiency and avoiding the time-consuming issue of testing a single sample.

When testing with this instrument, first check the accessories according to the packing list and prepare a complete set of tools. Under the conditions of ambient temperature ranging from room temperature to 35℃ and relative humidity ≤85%, connect the AC(220±10%)V, 50Hz power supply (the maximum power consumption of the instrument is 2000W), and then load the prepared lubricating oil sample into the porcelain crucible. Place it into the hole position of the heating furnace, set the temperature parameters, start the instrument, and the carbon residue determination can be completed in accordance with the SH/T0170 standard. Finally, the carbon residue content of the lubricating oil is calculated by weighing the mass of the residue.
